Skills Manual Unit Three Bundle for Teachers and Therapists
Awareness of yourself with others
The main objective of Unit 3 is learning to make social connections and maintaining those connections with others. This unit is heavily based on the clinically proven psycho-social intervention of cognitive behavioural therapy which supports and fits the ASD cognitive profile. During this unit, the learner is encouraged to continue to practice making observations of self and others as a tool for self-regulation. The learner will further consolidate the understanding of feelings, facial expressions and the body and observe and distinguish between the types of movements and expressions. It is important to grasp that interactions with others are not a random jumble of happenings but a flow of socially predictable events.
Observing, maintaining and working on relationships is critical to this unit and recognition
of the small interactions within relationships. It is about discovering how all the pieces of the puzzle of interacting with each other fit together, to enable connections to form, and for those connections to be enhancing to both people involved. It is also about discovering where self fits, how self fits, why self fits; in turn creating harmony and greater awareness of self with others.
Animals are introduced in this unit; they encourage the understanding of character and personality. The animals act as a safe and comfortable vehicle to learn about the human character and personalities and initiate discussions around trust and safety. In this unit, the true character of others is discussed and who we should allow into our inner circle: who is on the outside and why? Personal safety and feeling secure is imperative, as is learning how to interpret others, place others in our lives and connect with others.
A new scaffold is introduced in this unit called Stop, Think, Ask©. This critical scaffold provides guidance and clarification for interactions within relationships. The concept of slowing one’s thoughts and body, to create favourable conditions for observations and making connections, is introduced. Stop, Think, Ask© also encourages the learner to analyse their learning experience and grow through asking for help and questioning to improve situational outcomes.
