Skills Manual Unit One Bundle for Teachers and Therapists
Understanding yourself
Unit 1 centres learning around self-regulation; emotions, thoughts and facial expressions; and creating categories and preferences to gain an understanding of self. It is here that we discover the important elements that make us unique and begin to ground and affirm this uniqueness when building relationships. This unit is a starting point; filled with scaffolds and visuals to commence learning about oneself and one’s place in the world and within their family. It is also the place to establish lesson routines and begin using a scrapbook to collect and document the learning process. The learner is encouraged to create a title page for their scrapbook.
Self-esteem and self-talk are large components of this program. They are delivered through the clinically proven psycho-social intervention of cognitive behavioural therapy. The process of developing a language for self and others begins in this unit. It is critical that expressive language be developed for communication. Explicit teaching of labels and names, and how to express these in words and sentences, starts to develop in this unit. Communication is taught as a literacy using a synthetic approach.
Multisensory learning experiences are embedded in this program to satisfy the needs of many types of learners. It is clinically proven that a sensory-motor approach, which creates movement, play and spontaneity around learning, encourages deeper more intrinsic learning.
