Awareness of difference and change

The focus of Unit 5 is on flexible thinking relating to change and the unexpected. This unit explores change and how thought processes can lead to worry and how worry can affect feelings, thinking and quality of life. Activities focus on identifying these feelings in our mind and body and work towards creating the realisation that worry can come from rigid and inflexible thinking. The continuation of Stop, Think, Ask© supports the development of these concepts.

By normalising change, this unit shifts a chain of events from being new, different and possibly catastrophic to a process to be worked through and a normal part of everyday life. Worry is explored in various contexts to desensitise and create alternatives so a comfortable response can be explored. Chance is used as the teaching concept as it creates a playful way of trying alternative responses to a situation. This unit culminates with the playful term ‘spontaneous’, encouraging learners to explore change as a way of thinking and responding to situations, teaching an openness and an expectance of change.

The concept of the ‘domino effect’ is developed in this unit. This concept shows cause and effect and that each action has a reaction. This concept is related to relationships, interacting with others and the development of empathy. When an action is taken, it creates a domino effect, whereby another action occurs and so on. These actions may affect others proving that we are not alone but members of a community.

Individuals, and differences between individuals, is another concept explored in this unit. This concept is discovered through logically linking the combinations of character and personality traits. These links, coupled with observation and checking of links, enables comparisons to be drawn between individuals and their traits.
