Skills Manual Observation Tick Sheet
We live in a world where many aspects of life are measured, checked and tested. One such area of life is teaching and learning. Data is gathered to quantify learning; separate areas of learning and judge the functionality of a curriculum or learning program. This program embeds learning assessment through the use of the pre- and post-program observations tick sheet.
There is great value in measuring the outcomes of learning. It is important to take the time to implement this important tick sheet. The purpose of this tool is to breakdown the skills that are being taught in each unit and lesson into functional language skills across the areas of expressive language, receptive language, self-regulation, personal skills and interactional skills. These skills are the pragmatic outcomes of understanding self, understanding self with others and having an understanding of the world. The observation sheet creates a method of quantifying learning, firstly giving a baseline and then giving an outcome following program implementation.
It is recommended to have as many stakeholders as possible complete the pre- and then the post- program observations tick sheet. Stakeholders could include parents, family members, teachers, teacher aides, therapists, carers and others who see the student on a weekly basis. Collect the pre- data and put it aside until the end of the program when comparisons can be made between the scoring of the pre- and post- tick sheets and comparison between stakeholders. Comparisons will indicate if stakeholders have observed an increase in skills; a stasis of skills or a regression of skills during the course of the program in the identified areas.
