Skills Creator Short Stories - The story about the currawong and the group of noisy miners
Ornithology is the study of birds. In this program we introduce eight Australian birds that are common to the mid-eastern coast of Australia and regularly seen in the playgrounds and neighbourhoods. Short stories about each of the eight bird characters have been written to assist children with ASD and developmental delays.
The characters are used to explain and explore connections and communication within relationships; each bird has features that are relatable to children with ASD. The birds’ traits are easier to discuss than when relating these traits to people.
The stories provide an opportunity to explore interactions in social settings and peer groupings; pronouns have been omitted from the stories to reduce confusion. The stories have a pre and post reading literacy feature and focus on the topics of regulation, relating and interacting with others, self-esteem and self-talk. Children can explore and learn about themselves and others through these stories.
